Tuesday Video Challenge No. 14 - It Happens Slowly

If you haven't read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, well why not? Go read it and then come back because this is spoilery and it's such a beautiful book.
And sorry this isn't much of an actual video but it's worth it.

Another poem

There's thunder and lightning
And we're stuck inside
But it's okay
Because the sun shines
Harshly on our flaws
And I adore the rain
I've never loved you more
So let's be in love today
We'll go out and dance in the storm
And marvel at the heavens
And when the rain stops
And the sun comes to greet us
We'll say goodbye
And dash inside
Because we don't need it

I'm really quite proud of this one. This was another challenge - include rain. Nate said it was perfect. Which, of course, it isn't but still...it made me happy. Plus, I'm just really happy with it. I'm happy with how it turned out. It took me quite a while to write it, much longer than my poems usually take. And when I was finally done I felt like I'd written what I'd been trying to write for hours.

An Untitled Poem

I didn't know it'd be like this
If I'd known
Perhaps I wouldn't have wished for it
Because I did, you know
Wish for you
On every dandelion
And eyelash
And magic time
And shooting star
Though I didn't know it was you
That I was wishing for
I wonder,
If I'd known how this would feel -
How it would hurt
And how it would heal -
Would I still want it?
Want you?
Would it make sense
In my over-logical head
Would the pros outweigh the cons?
Should I have protected myself instead?
Should I have stood strong
Instead of falling heals over head
For you?

I Wrote A Flash Fiction Story

I woke up to the sensation of my phone vibrating under my head. Pulling the phone out from under my pillow I saw that the time was 1:30 AM. I quickly and quietly crawl out of bed, slip into the jeans and tshirt that I laid out the night before, slide my bare feet into my leather moccasins, and slip through my window. With a fwump I landed on the soft green grass a few feet below my window.
I crept along the house a few feet, hardly daring to breathe as I passed under my parents' window, and then I was homefree. We live on a dead end street so it's very quiet. I started walking. To the end of the street through the small bit of trees that we call woods and emerged in my favorite place in the world. A small roughly circular field, surrounded on all sides by more trees. It was dark there and I could see more stars than I'd ever seen before. Sometimes I'd come here and lie down in the middle and stare at the stars, dreaming, until I'd fall asleep. Then I'd realize my mistake and dash home, my parents would be frantic. I never did tell them where I'd been though. I'm sure other people knew about the clearing but it felt like it was mine and mine alone. I didn't want anyone else to know. Until one night when I silently emerged through the brambles and saw a dark shape lying in the grass. As my eyes adjusted to the light of the full moon I saw it was a boy, probably about my age. There was something boyish and innocent in his expression as he looked at the obsidian and diamond sky above him. And, without a second thought, I walked toward him, making sure to make enough noise that I wouldn't startle him. I came within a few feet of him but he still didn't look up at me. So I laid down next to him, maybe about six inches between us and, without quite understanding why, brushed my fingers against his. It was a feather touch. It could have been the grass if not for the warmth of it. And yet, he still didn't look at me. But he smiled, as if he'd been expecting me. And there, on that night, under the watchful eyes of the heavens, it made sense. Of course he'd been waiting for me. Why had I been so late?
But, of course, it didn't matter. I was there now. He grasped my hand and looked over at me, a serene smile playing about his lips. The full moon's light hit the side of his face, making it more angular and yet, somehow softer, as if he were glowing from the inside. I ached to kiss this boy, this boy I didn't know and that felt vaguely like a dream. Longed to feel his lips pressed against my own. And just then, he moved toward me and I closed the distance, softly pressing our mouths together. I'd only kissed one other boy and it hadn't been good. I was 14 and, for the most part, it felt like children playing at being grown. But this was different. Warm, slow and lovely. Right.
We only kissed and then we went back to lying side by side, staring at the stars.
I become drowsy soon as he hummed a lullaby and I drifted off to sleep with my head on his chest and our hands still clasped. The sun woke me gently the next day, the birds my alarm clock, but I woke alone.

I never did see the boy again. For weeks, I went to the clearing every night but I never saw anyone else. And it's been months now. It's starting to get cold, my breath leaving my body as visible puffs of air. But still I wait for him whenever I can. I feel it is what I must do, wait for him as he waited for me.

Nate challenged me to write a poem in 30 seconds using the word "obsidian" so here's that

An obsidian sky
Reflected in the pond at our feet
Lapping at the shore
As we stare at the stars
And wish for things
We'll never have
But we wish for it anyway
Because we can
And wishing sets us free

Rain splashes the dirt beneath our feet
Making a soft carpet of mud
Soothing my bare feet
Splattering my white dress
As we spin, madly dancing and laughing
Hair is plastered to my face
Water drips from your eyelashes
I see my reflection in your eyes
We're so close
You tell me I'm beautiful
I laugh as the clouds open up
And we dance as the gods cry above us

I don't know what love is
Or if you wonder about it
As much as I do
I don't know if I am in love
I don't know if it's a good idea
I don't know if it ever makes sense
But I know how I feel
I know that I smile when I see you smile
And laugh at the joy in your laugh
I know that I hate for you to be sad
And I know sheer joy in making you smile
I know I want to touch you
Kiss you, hug you
I want to be around you
As much as possible
Talk to you, argue
All the time
Live a life with you
I want to know that you want the same
I want to know that you want me

I'm just posting these in the order I wrote them

Stars and suns and moons
And other worlds
Circling in an age old dance
We revolve around each other
Natural satellites
Smiling as we come close
Reaching out, grasping,
Laughing
As we pass in the night
Because we know
We'll soon come around
To each other again

This one is my favorite of those I wrote that night (even if it is a little inaccurate)

Your voice
So sweet
Apollo is jealous
You make his lyre
Sound common
And he cries
Pulling his chariot
'Cross the skies
And the sun falls in shards
Of starlight
But their flame
Doesn't frighten me
For I'm already set ablaze
By you
And it is
A most enjoyable
Burn

Finally posting that poetry I said I was gonna do

Your eyes are stars that lead me home
To your arms, where I belong
I follow the music of your voice
Your perfect boyish laugh
Pulling all the lights from the sky
I taste their sweetness
On your tongue
As they twirl around us
In a wild faery dance
And I no longer know where,
Or when, I am
But next to you
And I could burn or drown
Or never eat again
For, right now,
This moment
I am immortal

My Review of Tweet Heart by Elizabeth Rudnick

Title: Tweet Heart {a novel in e-mails, blogs and tweets}
Author: Elizabeth Rudnick
Published: June 29, 2010
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Pages: 264 (Paperback)
Website: http://elizabethrudnick.com

This YA romance novel, told mostly in tweets with a few e-mails and blog posts thrown in, is about Claire (@claireRbear) and her three friends Lottie (@Lots0Love), Bennett (@KingofSlack) and Will (@WiseOneWP). Claire is freaking out a bit because she has just been made the school's new advice columnist. The only problem is that she has no clue about life or love, in fact, that would be her best friend, Lottie. Boy-crazy and sporty lacrosse captain, Lottie. But Claire decides to give the column a try. And when her longtime crush, JD Whitcomb, starts following her on Twitter, everything seems great. Until everything gets all tangled up like these tend to do. Why won't JD talk to her at school? Why's he acting like he doesn't know who he is or like he forgets the things they tweeted about? Is JD as perfect as she thought he was?
The biggest con to this story is its predictability. So, it doesn't have a mind-blowing plot. We all need a light, fluffy, cute book to read now and then. And this was a great one. I loved the characters. I loved reading Bennett's blog and Claire's advice answers (they were very funny). Lottie was a great foil to Claire and Bennett and Will reflected their relationship. I may just be a sucker for this type of hopeless romance book (as I could identify a little too well with Claire's character) but I enjoyed reading this immensely. It was very short (264 pages) and, with the majority being written in tweets, goes very quickly. I got it around noon on the 28th and finished it that night. And that wasn't me sitting down to read it, that was just reading whenever I got a chance while we ran errands and looked for bedding for my parents' new bed.
If you're looking for a realistic fiction, YA romance novel that'll have you going "aww", this is one of the best I've read in a long time. The fact that I liked this novel so much is even more surprising because I usually hate realistic fiction. So...take that how you will.

Yours in language and literature,
MoonChild
